Chavez-DeRemer Helps Elect Speaker Mike Johnson, an Anti-Abortion, Election-Denying GOP Extremist, Who Pledged to Slash Social Security and Medicare

Happy Valley, OR — Today, state Rep. and Democratic congressional candidate Janelle Bynum released the following statement after House Republicans selected Congressman Mike Johnson as Speaker:

“Republicans like Congresswoman Lori Chavez-DeRemer have made it perfectly clear they are not interested in governing or finding bipartisan solutions to our most pressing problems. She has continued to side with the most extreme factions of her party, bolstering a far-right MAGA extremist Speaker who sought to overturn the results of the 2020 election, pass a national abortion ban with no exceptions, and decimate Social Security and Medicare. She’s another rubber stamp to her party’s extreme agenda and not in the business of serving Oregon — that’s I’ll defeat her again in November.”

BACKGROUND:

Chavez-DeRemer’s pick for speaker pushed for a total abortion ban without exceptions, led efforts to slash Social Security and Medicare and was named “the most important architect of the Electoral College objections.”

Chavez-DeRemer’s positions fall out of step with the majority of OR-05, one of the top flip opportunities in the nation. Bynum is uniquely positioned to defeat Lori Chavez-DeRemer, having bested her twice before. Bynum has won the support of Governor Tina Kotek, Congresswoman Andrea Salinas, Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici, the Congressional Black Caucus, Oregon State Treasurer Tobias Read, Oregon House Speaker Dan Rayfield, and Oregon Majority Whip Julie Fahey.
