Happy Valley, OR — In a debate against State Representative Janelle Bynum, Democratic candidate for Oregon’s 5th Congressional District, Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer falsely claimed that Bynum is soft on crime, and supported the release of thousands of violent criminals from Oregon prisons.
The truth about Bynum’s record on safety:
- In the legislature, she worked on bipartisan legislation to recriminalize fentanyl and other dangerous drugs.
- Bynum led both state and local officials in addressing the fentanyl issue among teens.
- She also put together a bipartisan police reform package that was backed by the Oregon State Police, and other law enforcement groups.
The truth about Chavez-DeRemer’s record on safety:
- Chavez-DeRemer voted to arbitrarily slash nearly all government funding– including critical funding for law enforcement and public safety - by 30 percent. Supporting law enforcement includes funding them.
Bynum continues to be a proven leader on this issue, bringing together both parties, law enforcement, and members of the community to ensure our communities are safe and secure, all while ensuring accountability.
