Happy Valley, OR — State Representative Janelle Bynum, Democratic candidate for Oregon’s 5th Congressional District won her recent debates against Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer. Bynum highlighted how she will fight for OR-05, Chavez-DeRemer’s record of blocking protections for Social Security, and the importance of protecting reproductive freedom.

Fighting for OR-05

Janelle Bynum is a mom of four, a state representative, an engineer, and a small business owner, and is running for Congress because Washington isn’t working for families here in Oregon. Janelle Bynum is a champion, who will fight for the values and solutions Oregonians need in Congress - she’s ready to get to work.

“I’m running because Washington isn’t working for Oregon families,” said Bynum. “What is important to remember in this race is that I am a work horse. I am a champion of the people. I will stand with working families, time and time again…I will roll my sleeves up, and I am ready to get to work.”

Social Security

Chavez-DeRemer voted at least 26 times to block consideration of protections for Social Security and Medicare. Read the full voting record here. Janelle Bynum will fight to protect these hard-earned benefits so that our seniors can retire with dignity.

That’s why the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare (NCPSSM), Alliance for Retired Americans, and Social Security Works PAC have all endorsed Bynum.

Abortion

Janelle Bynum’s commitment to protecting reproductive freedom is unwavering. Before Roe v. Wade was overturned, Bynum protected reproductive rights in Oregon. Chavez-DeRemer denies supporting the heartbeat bill but, in Congress she supported a national ban on abortion that would override Oregon’s own laws and criminalize doctors.

“I’ve stood up for reproductive rights, full stop. I’m not mealy-mouthed about making sure that we protect Roe. I’m not mealy-mouthed about making sure that we protect birth control and IVF. I’m not mealy-mouthed about making sure that we stand up for full reproductive rights in this country…,” said Bynum. “You either support women and women's health across this county, or you don’t.”

Bynum’s campaign raised $3.4 million in Q3. The total is the highest quarterly fundraising total in state history - House or Senate. Two recent polls show Bynum leading Chavez-DeRemer by two points. The latest poll found Bynum leading with women voters and households with a union member. Recently, National Journal listed Oregon’s 5th Congressional District in the top 10 congressional races most likely to flip in 2024, jumping up 8 spots after State Rep. Janelle Bynum’s strong primary win “instantly making this seat a top offensive opportunity for the party.”
