Janelle Bynum Challenges Lori Chavez-DeRemer to Three Debates This Fall

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DATE: June 17, 2024

Happy Valley, OR – Today, State Rep. Janelle Bynum, the Democratic nominee for Oregon’s 5th Congressional District, is challenging Lori Chavez-DeRemer to three debates across the district this fall – one televised debate hosted by a station in the Portland media market, one televised debate hosted by a station in the Bend media market, and one multimedia debate live streamed and co-hosted by one or multiple organizations, in conjunction with a print and/or radio outlet, at a time and venue to be determined.

“Families all across the 5th district are telling me how concerned they are about Lori Chavez-DeRemer’s extreme MAGA positions, and as an elected official, it’s her obligation to explain herself to the voters,” said Rep. Janelle Bynum. “Lori: you owe Oregon voters an answer about why you’re backing convicted felon Donald Trump and why you’ve spent your tenure in Congress enabling his extreme anti-woman, anti-justice, and anti-democracy vision for America. The least you could do is justify your record directly to Oregonians on stage with me. Will you honor your oath of office and show Oregonians the choice on their hands, or will you hide from the decisions you’ve made in DC?”

The Bynum for Congress campaign will accept proposals for debates submitted by July 15, 2024. Accepted proposals will be notified by August 15, 2024. We encourage those that wish to host a debate to partner with other community organizations and media to ensure fair representation of our district.

If Lori Chavez-DeRemer refuses to agree to or attempts to dodge any of the accepted debates, we will move forward with scheduling the events out of fairness to the voters of Oregon’s 5th Congressional District – and require that an empty podium with a placard with the congresswoman’s name stand in her place.

To qualify for consideration, debate proposals must:

  • Propose a date for the debate to occur between September 9th and October 15th, 2024.

  • Propose debate parameters, including but not limited to: opening/closing statements, Q+A format, rebuttal rules, and an audience question section if applicable, etc.

  • For debate proposals hosted by a local TV station: Include confirmed moderators, and detail whether your debate will be a) livestreamed or pre-taped and b) include or exclude a live audience.

  • For debate proposals not hosted by a local TV station: Include a media partner with confirmed interest, a plan for online streaming to ensure that every voter has the opportunity to participate, confirmed moderators, and a plan for distributing audience tickets and soliciting audience questions.

Debates proposals can be submitted to press@janellebynum.com
