When drug violence threatened her inner city neighborhood in Washington, DC, Janelle put that ideal into practice. She earned scholarships and put herself through school, earning her Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and her Master’s degree in Business Administration.Today, Janelle and her husband, Mark, live in Happy Valley with their children. Janelle operates her family’s small business, running four restaurants in our community. ON THE ISSUES

Too many Oregonians are priced out of their communities or unable to afford a home. That’s why in the state legislature, I worked on efforts to lower the cost of housing, protect tenants, and ensure low-income earners could pay their utility bills. I’ll continue to fight for housing affordability and remove red tape for housing construction in Congress.

ADDRESSING HOUSING AFFORDABILITY&nbsp;

Homelessness is one of the greatest social and economic challenges of our lifetime, and it’s critical we get people off our streets. As a legislator, I helped pass measures to prevent homelessness, increase shelter capacity, and expand mental health services. In Congress, I’ll work with local and state leaders to allocate more resources to address homelessness for our communities.

ENDING HOMELESSNESS

The effects of climate change are felt close to home with brutal summers and the threat of wildfires year-round. I’m not waiting to get to Washington to tackle the climate crisis — we’re already part of the solution in the state legislature, sponsoring legislation to make Oregon the clean energy hub in the country. I’ll expand upon this work on the federal level, reducing our carbon footprint and creating good-paying union jobs.

TAKING CLIMATE ACTION

Our country doesn’t thrive unless our local economies thrive, and that means creating good jobs close to home, supporting small businesses, and bringing down the cost of living. These are issues I’ve championed as the chairwoman of the House Committee on Small Business/Economic Development and co-chair of the Joint Committee on Semiconductors, exploring ways we can expand our workforce in the tech industry. I led on passing the Oregon CHIPS Act, the most pro-business, pro-worker, pro-Oregon collaboration in history. I’ll bring the same vision to Congress.

SUPPORTING OUR ECONOMY

No person should be a medical emergency away from bankruptcy, but sadly that happens all too often in our country. In the Oregon state legislature, I worked to expand access to health care and mental health services so everyday Oregonians don’t have to choose between putting food on the table or a trip to the hospital. We need Congress to act — and that starts with protecting Medicare, expanding Medicaid, and lowering the cost of prescription drug prices.

LOWERING THE COST OF HEALTH CARE

As a mom, I want our daughters and sons to have the same rights, but Republican extremists like Lori Chavez-DeRemer think politicians should be able to make health care decisions for women. They won’t stop until they pass a national abortion ban. I’m running to defend reproductive rights and codify Roe v. Wade at the federal level.

PROTECTING OUR RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS

Education is our greatest equalizer — I know this firsthand as the daughter of public school teachers and mom of four children. Our education policies should focus on uplifting our students, and that includes increasing teacher pay, decreasing class sizes, and improving school resources and facilities.

Janelle Bynum, a Happy Valley Democrat and fourth-term legislator who has never run for Congress.The winner will take on Rep. She denies those claims and says they are politically motivated. Each of these victories came in an Oregon House district that encompasses the suburban Portland area of Happy Valley, an area much smaller than the congressional district she’s seeking now.Bynum is an engineer who has four kids and owns four McDonald’s restaurants. As a lawmaker, she helped pass bipartisan bills aimed at holding police accountable and improving the local semiconductor industry. High-profile Democratic congressional race heats up ahead of Oregon primary election

A new poll paid for by Janelle Bynum’s congressional campaign shows the state representative with a slim lead over fellow Democrat Jamie McLeod-Skinner days before ballots will be mailed out.&nbsp;The phone poll of 402 likely Democratic voters in Oregon’s 5th Congressional District, conducted between April 26 and 28 by Democratic polling firm Brilliant Corners, found that 37% of respondents said they would vote for Bynum or were leaning toward voting for her, compared to 34% of voters who said the same about McLeod-Skinner. More than a quarter of respondents were still undecided with a little less than a month to go before the May 21 deadline to return ballots.&nbsp;It’s a huge shift in the race since last summer and fall, when a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://oregoncapitalchronicle.com/2023/06/27/mcleod-skinner-seriously-considering-another-run-for-congress-in-oregons-5th-district/">poll commissioned</a> by McLeod-Skinner and another <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.termlimits.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/or5toplines.pdf">poll</a> by a group that supports term limits for members of Congress both showed McLeod-Skinner trouncing the competition, including Metro Council President Lynn Peterson, who has dropped out and Bynum, who entered the race in June. Since then, national Democrats and state Democratic leaders have coalesced around Bynum as their preferred choice to take on vulnerable Republican incumbent Lori Chavez-DeRemer in the Democratic-leaning 5th District.&nbsp;Bynum spokeswoman Blakely Wall said in a statement that the new poll underscores the momentum the campaign has built.&nbsp;“We are proud of our campaign’s grassroots support that has made this all possible, and we look forward to building on this progress to help take back the House and bring true representation back to Oregon families,” Wall said.&nbsp;Brilliant Corners also did polling for Bynum’s campaign in February, and comparisons show that the state representative has become better known in the district over recent months. In February, about two-thirds of voters polled recognized McLeod-Skinner’s name, but less than a quarter of respondents knew Bynum. By April, 69% of respondents knew McLeod-Skinner and 53% knew Bynum.Respondents rated them similarly on a scale from 0 to 100 in February, with Bynum averaging 59.5 and McLeod-Skinner averaging 58.7.
